This workshop is built around geospatial technologies that can be used for natural resources planning and management. Come and learn about how tools such as GIS and geospatial data sets are used for making management decisions.
Agenda
Thursday, February 1
9:00 am - 3:00 pm
In this module participants will learn the basics of GIS, obtaining and importing geodata, overlaying and querying data, and creating maps for reporting.
Topics Covered:
-
Importing GPS field data to GIS
-
Creating and editing shapefile objects and
associated data attribute tables
-
Import and view geo-referenced raster
images
-
Querying data
-
Using techniques to buffer, merge, and clip objects
-
Measure areas and distances
-
Work with projecting data
-
Create maps for presentation and printing
Workshop Format
The GIS workshop portion will include hands-on computer exercises using a freeware program called fGIS. fGIS is a stand alone GIS that provides the basics for importing, overlaying, digitizing, and querying geospatial data sets. A workshop binder and CD will contain resources and software for attendees to take home.
Class size is limited to 19 people. Registration is on a first-come first-serve basis so register early!
Who Should Participate?
This workshop is designed for those who have no to limited experience using GIS. It is designed for natural resource land and water resource managers, forest and woodland managers, consultants, and state and federal agency personnel.
