Using GPS and GIS Technologies for Woodland Management

This workshop is built around geospatial technologies that can be used for natural resources planning and management. There will be particular emphasis on managing woodlands. Come and learn about how tools such as GPS, GIS, and geospatial data sets are used for making management decisions.

The GPS workshop exercises will use handheld Garmin GPS units. This will include outside field work, so dress appropriately. The GIS workshop portion will include hands-on computer exercises. A workshop binder and CD will contain resources and software for attendees to take home. You are welcome to bring your own laptop and handheld Garmin. Please contact us before bringing them to make sure it will handle the exercises.

Class size is limited to 18 people so register early!

Agenda

GPS - Day 1
Tuesday November 8

9:00 am - 4 pm

GPS is the foundation for navigation, guidance, and making management decisions from geographically referenced data. In this module participants will learn about GPS, learn data collection techniques, and how to collect location information using handheld Garmin GPS units. This will involve hands-on outdoor exercises.

Topics Covered:

- Basics of GPS operation
- Investigate field surveillance applications
- Considerations in selecting and using GPS equipment and software
- Collecting points, lines and object areas
- Techniques for good GPS data collection
- Exporting GPS data for viewing

GIS - Day 2

Wednesday November 9
9:00 am - 3 pm

In this module participants will learn the basics of GIS, obtaining and importing geodata, overlaying and querying data, and creating maps for reporting. Participation is required in Day 1 GPS to complete the exercises.

Topics Covered:

- Importing GPS field data to GIS
- Creating and editing shapefile objects and associated data attribute tables
- Import and view geo-referenced raster images
- Querying data
- Using techniques to buffer, merge, and clip objects
- Measure areas and distances
- Work with projecting data
- Create maps for presentation and printing

What You Will Take Home

•  Basic concepts and understanding of GPS and GIS
•  Knowledge of what equipment, software and services are needed for specific applications
•  Ability to spatially reference field data
•  Calculate distances of paths and acreage of woodland
•  Delineate forest stands, riparian buffers, and other objects
•  Plan trails and paths spatially from other geo-referenced data sets
•  Field record keeping techniques for effective data collection
•  Ability to create maps for reports and planning
•  Learn where to find free geospatial data
•  Free software and utilities for GPS and GIS

Who Should Participate?

This workshop is designed for those who have no to limited experience using GPS and GIS. It is designed for natural resource land and water resource managers, forest and woodland managers, consultants, and state and federal agency personnel.

SAF CEU credits available at 11 hours Category 1
